“CALL FOR A FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS”

A statement by Savenaca Narube, leader of Unity Fiji 

“Despite the explicit requirement of the 2013 Constitution, none of the three general elections under the Fiji First government was pronounced free and fair by international observers,” says Savenaca Narube, the leader of Unity Fiji.

“The absence of a free and fair elections must be of serious concern to everyone especially this Government,” adds Narube.

“Elections are the bedrock of democracy. Without a free and fair election, that will always be doubts that the government who wins the elections has the people’s mandate.”

The former Governor of the Reserve bank of Fiji said that Unity Fiji strongly suspected that its votes were stolen in the last two elections. Unfortunately, this coalition Government has failed in its promise to audit the Elections Management System (EMS). We would never know the truth as evidences had been burnt.  

“We must therefore make every effort to make the 2026 elections free and fair.”

“However, I am extremely concerned that we have the review of the 2013 Constitution happening at the doorsteps of the general elections. This is bound to deviate much needed financial and human resources from the elections. More seriously, the amendments to the Constitution are bound to influence the choice of voters. This should not be allowed to happen,” says the leader of Unity Fiji.

“I am therefore pleading with the Prime Minister to resist the temptation to use the amendment to the Constitution as an election weapon. I urge the PM to defer the amendments to after the elections. If he takes this option, the country can focus all its efforts to holding a free and fair election, and at the same time, give the amendments to the Constitution the attention and focus that it deserves. It is a win-win combination”
